Rachel Bloom Wrote A Song For "The Flash" / "Supergirl" Musical Ep

Rachel Bloom Wrote A Song For "The Flash" / "Supergirl" Musical Ep

Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin, Rachel Bloom

The CW

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom has co-written a song for The CW's upcoming musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl, BuzzFeed News can exclusively reveal!

“As soon as I heard that they were doing a musical crossover, I e-mailed Mark Pedowitz who connected me to Greg and Andrew. I immediately offered them my services," Bloom told BuzzFeed News in a statement. "As soon as they picked one of my song ideas, I hopped on the phone with my old Robot Chicken boss Tom Root and we brainstormed and, based on that brainstorm, I wrote up the song ‘Superfriends.’ I am so excited to contribute more to the upward trend that is musicals in television and film. Music can be one of the most amazing and efficient forms of storytelling and character development. Also, it was really fun to write a comedy song for two superheroes.”

“Superfriends" will be performed by Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist in "Duet," The Flash portion of the two-episode crossover, airing March 21 (the musical action kicks off at the end of Supergirl's March 20 episode). Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, Carlos Valdes, Jeremy Jordan, and John Barrowman will also be singing in the episode, which guest stars Glee alum Darren Criss as Music Meister, a.k.a. the musical's big bad.

Here's Starbucks' Letter Challenging Trump

Here's Starbucks' Letter Challenging Trump

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz sent a letter to all employees on Sunday, citing "the confusion, surprise and opposition" to President Donald Trump's executive order banning people from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the US.

"We are living in an unprecedented time, one in which we are witness to the conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream, being called into question," he wrote. "I am hearing the alarm you all are sounding that the civility and human rights we have all taken for granted for so long are under attack."

While America's big restaurant chains have largely remained silent on Trump's recent actions, Starbucks joins a group of large technology companies, including Google, Apple and Facebook, who have voiced concern.

In the letter, Schultz challenged Trump's key plans on immigration, healthcare, and building a border wall with Mexico, and pledged to "do everything we can possibly do to support and invest in every partner’s well-being while taking the actions that are squarely within our ability to control."

The company committed to hiring more refugees in the US. "We are developing plans to hire 10,000 [refugees] over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business. And we will start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel," the letter stated. One of the first people blocked by Trump's order on Friday was an Iraqi who helped the US military.

Schultz also expressed support for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, an immigration policy started by the Obama administration that allows certain undocumented immigrants to receive deferred action on deportation and makes them eligible for work permits.

As President Trump plans to build a border wall with Mexico, Starbucks pledged to "build bridges, not walls, with Mexico" and to continue investing there. Trump's wall plan has sparked anger among consumers in Mexico, who have already launched social media campaigns agains big US brands including one called #adiosstarbucks.

And as Trump and Republicans move to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Schultz also said employees would still be eligible for health benefits if that happens. "If you are benefits eligible, you will always have access to health insurance through Starbucks," he wrote.

Here is the full letter.

Dear partners,

I write to you today with deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise. Let me begin with the news that is immediately in front of us: we have all been witness to the confusion, surprise and opposition to the Executive Order that President Trump issued on Friday, effectively banning people from several predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States, including refugees fleeing wars. I can assure you that our Partner Resources team has been in direct contact with the partners who are impacted by this immigration ban, and we are doing everything possible to support and help them to navigate through this confusing period.

We are living in an unprecedented time, one in which we are witness to the conscience of our country, and the promise of the American Dream, being called into question. These uncertain times call for different measures and communication tools than we have used in the past. Kevin and I are going to accelerate our commitment to communicating with you more frequently, including leveraging new technology platforms moving forward. I am hearing the alarm you all are sounding that the civility and human rights we have all taken for granted for so long are under attack, and want to use a faster, more immediate form of communication to engage with you on matters that concern us all as partners.

I also want to take this opportunity to announce specific actions we are taking to reinforce our belief in our partners around the world and to ensure you are clear that we will neither stand by, nor stand silent, as the uncertainty around the new Administration’s actions grows with each passing day:

Support for DACA: As I wrote to Senators Graham and Durbin this week, we are enthusiastically behind their work to support “Dreamers” across our country – including those young men and women who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. There are nearly three quarters of a million hardworking people contributing to our communities and our economy because of this program. At Starbucks, we are proud to call them partners and to help them realize their own American Dream. We want them to feel welcome and included in our success, which is why we reimburse them for the biennial fee they must pay to stay in the program and why we have offered DACA-related services at our Opportunity Youth hiring fairs.

Hiring Refugees: We have a long history of hiring young people looking for opportunities and a pathway to a new life around the world. This is why we are doubling down on this commitment by working with our equity market employees as well as joint venture and licensed market partners in a concerted effort to welcome and seek opportunities for those fleeing war, violence, persecution and discrimination. There are more than 65 million citizens of the world recognized as refugees by the United Nations, and we are developing plans to hire 10,000 of them over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business. And we will start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support.

Building Bridges, Not Walls, With Mexico: We have been open for business in Mexico since 2002, and have since opened 600 stores in 60 cities across the country, which together employ over 7,000 Mexican partners who proudly wear the green apron. We have sourced coffee from Mexico’s producers and their families for three decades and last fall, we also announced the creation of a farmer support center in Chiapas to help accelerate our collective ability to grow and export some of the world’s finest coffees from this important growing region, while donating more than $2 million to support the livelihood, food security and water quality of coffee producing communities in Oaxaca. With the support of thousands of Starbucks partners and millions of customers, we have also donated half a million coffee trees to support 70,000 families, and we will be expanding the initiative this year to generate another 4 million tree donations. Coffee is what unites our common heritage, and as I told Alberto Torrado, the leader of our partnership with Alsea in Mexico, we stand ready to help and support our Mexican customers, partners and their families as they navigate what impact proposed trade sanctions, immigration restrictions and taxes might have on their business and their trust of Americans. But we will continue to invest in this critically important market all the same.

Our Healthcare Commitment to You: Finally, let me restate what we have recently communicated with you about the Affordable Care Act – our commitment remains that if you are benefits eligible, you will always have access to health insurance through Starbucks. Many of you have expressed concerns that recent government actions may jeopardize your ability to participate in the Affordable Care Act. If the recent Executive Order related to health care remains in place and the Affordable Care Act is repealed causing you to lose your healthcare coverage, you will always have the ability to return and can do so within 30 days of losing that coverage rather than having to wait for an open enrollment period. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Benefits Center at 877-728-9236.

In the face of recent events around the world, let me assure you that we will stay true to our values and do everything we can possibly do to support and invest in every partner’s well-being while taking the actions that are squarely within our ability to control. This is our focus: providing a Third Place of respite for those around the world who seek it, daily.

Starbucks has and will always stand for opportunity – opportunity for our young people who are working to land their first job in the 75 countries where we do business, opportunity for our farmers who care so deeply for the highest of quality coffee we offer to customers all around the globe, and yes, opportunity for those who come to America in search of their own fresh start – whether that is with Starbucks directly, or through our suppliers or our partner companies.

If there is any lesson to be learned over the last year, it’s that your voice and your vote matter more than ever. We are all obligated to ensure our elected officials hear from us individually and collectively. Starbucks is doing its part; we need you to use the collective power of your voices to do the same while respecting the diverse viewpoints of the 90 million customers who visit our stores in more than 25,000 locations around the world.

So, while we seek to understand what the new Administration’s policies mean for us and our business both domestically and around the world, I can assure you that we will do whatever it takes to support you, our partners, to realize your own dreams and achieve your own opportunities. We are in business to inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time – whether that neighborhood is in a Red State or a Blue State; a Christian country or a Muslim country; a divided nation or a united nation. That will not change. You have my word on that.

Onward,

Howard

So I spoke to two registered dietitians to get a better idea, and to figure out if there's any science behind those claims. Here's what I found out.

Kombucha starts with a bologna-looking gelatinous thing called a SCOBY, which stands for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.

Kombucha starts with a bologna-looking gelatinous thing called a SCOBY, which stands for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.

Yum. It's basically a collection of bacteria and yeast living in harmony, and while there are several strains of yeast that can be in a SCOBY, the main type of bacteria tends to be acetic acid bacteria.

Day Two: How to Fill in the Details of Your Winning Piece of Content

Day Two: How to Fill in the Details of Your Winning Piece of Content

A System for Easily Publishing Consistently Great Content - Pamela Wilson on ProBlogger.net

This is part three in a series on Content Marketing Strategies from Pamela Wilson of Big Brand System.

If you’re a coffee or tea drinker, Day 2 might be a good day to drink an extra cup. You’re going to write a lot today, so do whatever it takes to go into the day with your energy high.

Need to catch up on the rest of the 4 Day Content Creation System? Here are the previous posts:

The first thing to do on Day 2 is to review the headline and subheads you wrote the day before. You’re seeing them with fresh eyes now — do they still make sense? Do they sound intriguing? Do you feel excited about writing what’s missing? (If so, that’s a good sign.)

If you see weaknesses in your basic structure, take some time to fix them before you start to write. Reinforce your structure so it’s strong enough to support the words you’re about to hang on it.

Once you’re happy with the headlines and subheads, it’s time to fill in the details.

Ready? Set? Write!

Write Your First Draft … Fast

I know this sounds ridiculous, but I want you to think of your Day 2 work like a race. And there’s a good reason for this.

On Day 2, your goal is to write the first draft of your article. This is a stage where you might get stuck: after all, writing a first draft feels like actually writing your content.

And it is, but I want you to keep it in perspective at this stage.

What you’re writing is a messy, junky first draft. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It won’t seem polished.

What it needs to be — by the end of Day 2 — is done.

Done is way more important than perfect at this stage. Remember: no one is going to see this except you.

So write, write, write. Do not go back and edit. Don’t attempt to polish and perfect what you’ve written. Write forward, not backward.

Day 2 Tips

Write your first sentence. My book contains a whole chapter on writing compelling first sentences. I know — overkill, right? But the first sentence is an important transition element that will pull your reader from your headline into your content, so don’t skimp on this handful of words.

Write your introduction section. Your introduction section is equally important. Your reader is making a decision about whether he or she should spend time reading the rest of your article. Your introduction section should sell the benefits they’ll gain from reading your content. Review the Introduction chapter for help with this section.

Fill in under your subheads. You’ve thought through your content structure and written compelling subheads. Now fill in a first-draft version of the text that will go beneath each subhead to explain the point you want to make. See the Main Copy chapter for guidance.

Write your summary. Wrap it all up with a summary that refers to your main points and shows your reader the journey they’ve taken. The Summary chapter will help you write this part.

Add a call to action. Remember, all content includes a call to action, even if all you do is ask for comments. Think through this important interaction and get more information about how to effectively write it in the Call to Action chapter.

Remember at this stage, don’t sweat the details.

Just get your thoughts down, and don’t edit anything. You have a full day reserved for editing, and you’ll do a better job editing if you leave some time between the writing stage and the editing stage anyway.

Whew! That was a lot of work in one day.

It’s time to walk away from your content. Once you’ve written your first draft, you can feel satisfied that you’ve gotten your thoughts down.

Do something else and get a good night’s rest because you’ll need fresh, rested eyes to do the next day’s work!

Despite Boycotts Nationwide, "A Dog's Purpose" Made A Lot Of Money

Despite Boycotts Nationwide, "A Dog's Purpose" Made A Lot Of Money

Joe Lederer / Universal Pictures / DreamWorks / Walden Media

HOLLYWOOD, Ca. — After TMZ posted a video showing a German shepherd terrified to shoot a water scene for A Dog's Purpose, animal lovers nationwide denounced the film. Producer Gavin Polone along with Birds & Animals Unlimited, which provided the animals for A Dog's Purpose, said the video had been edited to obscure safety precautions that were in place and to remove footage of the dog happily jumping into the water. Though the outrage and PETA's call for a boycott and protests outside theaters in major U.S. cities continued, they did not wreck the film's performance at the box office: It still made $18.4 million in its opening weekend.

At the Arclight theater in Hollywood, approximately 50 protestors stood on Friday night to urge passersby not to see A Dog's Purpose. Some of them worked or regularly volunteered for PETA, but all of them were mobilized by the video, which had gone viral the previous week. Lisa Lange, senior vice president of communications at PETA, said the video had provoked more action than her organization's own investigation into Birds & Animals Unlimited. "You can't forget, once you see something like that happen to a dog," Lange said.

The leaked video inspired some who haven't worked with PETA to seek out the protest. Sandra Syatt, for example, went to the Arclight because she was overcome by emotion after seeing the clip on TMZ. "I just imagined if that was happening to my dog," she said. Syatt's golden retriever, Oscar, was almost 12 when he died in 2015, and Syatt was wearing a bone-shaped locket with his name engraved on it and a bit of his fur inside.

Marisol Uribe signed up to receive emails from PETA after seeing the clip on Instagram. "I have two dogs, and I love them; they're my babies," said the first-time protester as she handed out flyers.

"I wanted to hold a sign, but they ran out," she added.

Dawn Jaro came to the theater and held a sign for more than an hour next to her sister Justene Jaro after Justene simply described the video to her. "I can't bear to watch these things," Dawn said.
