Just How Big Could “Black Panther” Be At The Box Office?

Just How Big Could “Black Panther” Be At The Box Office?

On Monday, the cast and filmmakers of Marvel Studios' Black Panther debuted their film at a lavish red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, while preview audiences in LA and New York got the first look at one of the buzziest movies of 2018. The response has been nothing short of ecstatic, elevating what was already one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year to a level of breathlessness enjoyed only by movies with Star and Wars in their titles.

How breathless? On Wednesday, Fandango announced that advanced ticket sales for Black Panther are currently outpacing every other superhero movie on record. On Tuesday and Wednesday morning, the film was site's top seller, two weeks in advance of its Feb. 16 debut.

And BuzzFeed News has learned that early box office projections for Black Panther's debut over Presidents Day weekend have the film earning anywhere between $100 million and $140 million over the four-day holiday. (A spokesperson for Disney declined to comment on the record about the projections, but did say that the studio is "incredibly excited about the early reactions" to Black Panther.)

To better understand what is causing such exhilaration — and why it represents a watershed moment for Hollywood — it would be worth playing the following game: Take a look at the list of the all-time highest-grossing movies at the domestic box office, and try to find a movie with a predominantly black cast — not one with a single black star, or even two black leads, but a movie, like Black Panther, where the vast majority of the cast is populated with black people.

Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong'o in Black Panther.

Matt Kennedy / Marvel Studios

You will, of course, run into a tidal wave of disparate movies populated almost exclusively with white people, including (but not nearly limited to) Titanic (No. 3), Jurassic World (No. 4), The Avengers (No. 6), The Dark Knight (No. 7), The Dark Knight Rises (No. 14), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (No. 16), Spider-Man (No. 25), Jurassic Park (No. 26), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (No. 30), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (No. 33), Spider-Man 2 (No. 34), and Spider-Man 3 (No. 48).

But it won't be until you reach No. 296 on the list — past Night at the Museum (No. 112), Ted (No. 154), Batman Forever (No. 219), and Big Daddy (No. 286) — that you will find a blockbuster movie that stars predominantly black people: Straight Outta Compton, which earned $161.2 million domestically in 2015.

To be sure, there have been several films headlined by black stars (OK, mostly Will Smith and Eddie Murphy) that have made more. But when a black actor ends up at the center of a major movie — like with Independence Day, Hitch, Beverly Hills Cop, and Doctor Dolittle — they usually end up surrounded by a whole lot of white people. Even hit movies that are pointedly about issues that black people have faced in America, like Hidden Figures, The Help, Django Unchained, and Get Out, must by the necessity of their storylines include major roles for several white people.

It's what makes Black Panther — an expensive, effects-driven superhero movie set in a (fictional) African nation, and featuring a profusion of many of the most acclaimed black actors working in Hollywood — such a singular event. There really hasn't been another movie like it, so predicting just what box office records it could break is almost a fool's errand. But let's try anyway!

The top-grossing movies worldwide with a majority black cast

Let's be clear: There is no such thing as a "black-themed movie." But it is a depressing fact how little audiences have flocked to any movies cast largely with black actors. Even if Black Panther falls short of its projections, it should easily set a new high bar for what Hollywood can expect to make from a movie with a poster almost wholly made up of black actors.

The biggest domestic opening weekend for a black director

The biggest domestic opening weekend for a black director

Adam B. Vary / BuzzFeed News / Via boxofficemojo.com

Should Black Panther exceed $100 million over its first three days in the US and Canada, it would give its director Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) the record for the best domestic opening weekend for a black director, surpassing F. Gary Gray's $98.8 million record for 2017's The Fate of the Furious. (Gray's record for the top opening weekend worldwide of $541.9 million, thanks to the massive international popularity of the Fast and Furious franchise, likely remains safe for now.)

Adjusting for domestic ticket price inflation, Coogler still has a steep hill to climb if he wants to claim the domestic record for the top-grossing film from a black director. That record is still held by acting royalty Sidney Poitier, for helming the 1980 Richard Pryor–Gene Wilder comedy Stir Crazy.

The biggest debut for a Marvel Studios franchise

The chances are slim that Black Panther could break the opening weekend record for Marvel Studios, which is still held by its 2012 mega-franchise film The Avengers (at $207.4 million). But Black Panther could easily claim the opening weekend record for a superhero's inaugural film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by leaping past the $117 million debut of 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Granted, the MCU version of both characters first appeared in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, but this is complicated enough as it is.

The biggest debut for a film in February

The biggest debut for a film in February

Adam B. Vary / BuzzFeed News / Via boxofficemojo.com

Ironically, this could be the hardest box office barrier for Black Panther to breach. For decades, Hollywood treated the first three months of the year as a place to dump movies that weren't working and were expected to flop. But by the mid-2000s, studios began to reinvest in the first quarter of the year, culminating in the one-two-three February punch of 2014's The LEGO Movie ($69 million debut), 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey ($85.2 million debut), and finally the current record-holder, 2016's Deadpool, with a $132.4 million debut.

Over the four-day Presidents Day weekend, Deadpool made $152.2 million, which is outside of Black Panther's most optimistic projections. But keep in mind that early estimates for Wonder Woman had that film opening with $65 million domestically, and then the movie actually debuted with a record-setting $103.3 million. Word-of-mouth ultimately drove Wonder Woman to become one of the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time, with $412.5 million domestically.

Like Wonder Woman, Black Panther currently has no cinematic peers, so its ultimate box office fate remains a tantalizing mystery. But should Black Panther enjoy Wonder Woman–level box office prosperity, one would expect Hollywood to seek to repeat that success — early, and often.

The Guy Behind The "Left Shark" Meme Finally Talked About What Happened During That Super Bowl Performance

Spoiler: It was all planned.

Many Americans will gather around their television sets on Sunday and watch the Super Bowl while chomping on various snack foods, but did you ever wonder what happened to that person behind the infamous "Left Shark" meme from 2015?

Ya know, the guy who sorta just did his own thing while Katy Perry sang, leaving everyone wondering why "Right Shark" was the only fish moving his fins in sync with the music?

NBC

Well, in an interview with NPR on Wednesday, Bryan Gaw officially outed himself as the man behind "Left Shark," sharing what went down during one of the most memorable* halftime performances in recent memory.

Though Gaw's identity was deduced via social media at the time, he's finally speaking on the record.

instagram.com

Gaw explained that there was "flexibility" with the choreography, so the moves he made were completely intentional. That's right, it was all planned.

instagram.com

"So there's a set choreography," Gaw said. "There's also what's called free-style choreography, or, like, you get to move around or play your character as a dancer."

"I'm in a 7-foot blue shark costume. There's no cool in that. So what's the other option? Well, I'm gonna play a different character."

The character Gaw says he was aiming to channel was "an underdog," the "every day person."

He said he wanted to show people that they don't have to be perfect in life.

instagram.com

And if you thought Gaw would be ashamed to claim his portion of pop culture history on his résumé, you'd be wrong. "People are like, 'Whoa, that's so cool,'" he said, when asked how people respond to seeing that entry on his work history.

"Don't take life so seriously," Gaw said. "I was on the biggest stage in the world, acting crazy."

"I got a lot of press and a lot of attention in the most positive ways, it's great. Be you, do you."

“One Day At A Time” Season 2 Addresses Donald Trump Without Ever Using His Name

“One Day At A Time” Season 2 Addresses Donald Trump Without Ever Using His Name

Isabella Gomez (Elena Alvarez), Rita Moreno (Lydia Riera), and Justina Machado (Penelope Alvarez), in the "Roots" episode of Season 2 of One Day at a Time.

Netflix

Donald Trump’s name is not explicitly mentioned in the second season of One Day at a Time, but his presence is felt everywhere.

Stars Isabella Gomez and her onscreen mom, Justina Machado, told BuzzFeed News they couldn't ignore how the Trump administration is working to reshape the country, especially for immigrants, but they were adamant about not wanting his name anywhere near their show.

"We’re a Latinx family living in 2018, so we had to mention it because it affects us, it affects our country, and it affects our world," said Gomez. But, she said, she was "so happy we never have to say his name."

“I love the episode about citizenship," added Machado, "when Elena says, ‘That monster is in the White House’ and Lydia says, ‘Don’t blame me, I didn’t vote for him.’

"But we never have to say his name because we don’t want to say his name," she said.

The Alvarez family is comprised of Penelope Alvarez (Machado), her teenage daughter Elena Alvarez (Gomez), younger son Alex Alvarez (Marcel Ruiz), and Penelope’s mother, Lydia Riera (Rita Moreno), who lives with them in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

This season, which debuted on Netflix on Jan. 26, navigates what life is like for a Cuban-American family in Trump's America, where many Latino immigrants are wondering if they're welcome or not.

AFP / Getty Images

In Episode 4, titled “Roots,” Lydia reveals to her family that she never became a US citizen because she didn't want to give up on a country that still felt like home. Elena, who saw her best friend's parents get deported to Mexico in the first season, pleads with her grandmother to take the necessary steps to become a citizen because, as she says, “these are very anti-immigrant times.”

Gomez said she had a difficult time filming the conversation between Elena and Lydia because of the subject matter.

“It was a hard scene for me to find the beats because Elena’s usually very angry and she just yells and marches and that’s what she does. But she was scared here,” Gomez said. “She can’t get deported because she was born here, but we get to see her fear of 'My grandma could be deported and I lost my best friend to deportation, even if it wasn’t directly.'

Machado said she was glad that she gets to tell a story about a Cuban-American family because “we forget that this was only 40 years ago that they came here with absolutely nothing.”

But she stressed that “every Latino story is different” and that Latino families experience these issues differently depending on their backgrounds.

“We don’t have the same immigrant story. I’m Puerto Rican; we’re American citizens. Cubans are political exiles,” Machado said. “I don’t even know what it feels like to be scared to be deported.

"But I know what it feels like to be a Latina … and I love that this Cuban-American family is dealing with [Trump’s presidency] the way this Cuban-American family would deal with it," she said.

Adam Rose / Netflix

The actors said One Day at a Time is doing wonders for Latino representation on television in ways that not many other shows have been. Their sitcom does not include stereotypes like “sexy maids” or “gangbanger girlfriends,” the actors said, but instead depicts the Alvarez family as “layered human beings.”

“It’s changing the Latino narrative and it’s letting people know that we are more alike than we are different,” Machado said. “We’re telling a universal story through our Latino lens.”

Lots Of People Who Stopped Eating At Chipotle Are Defecting To Chick-Fil-A

Lots Of People Who Stopped Eating At Chipotle Are Defecting To Chick-Fil-A

Chipotle has struggled over the last two years to recover from a series of food safety scares. Despite attempts to win customers back with free food, loyalty programs, a big ad campaign, and new menu items like chorizo and queso, many haven't returned. The average store is making about 23% less than it was in 2015.

So where did diners go?

New data provided to BuzzFeed News by data analytics company Earnest Research show that customers who stopped eating at Chipotle increasingly dined at Chick-fil-A. They also turned to delivery companies such as Grubhub/Seamless, Postmates, and DoorDash.

About 30% of people who ate at Chipotle in 2015 did not return in 2017, according to Earnest.

The company analyzed anonymized credit card data of more than 567,000 people who ate at Chipotle in 2015 to evaluate how their habits changed by 2017. Among the 166,630 customers in that group who stopped eating at Chipotle entirely, they went to Chick-fil-A 5.5% more in 2017 than in 2015. These people also increased their visits to salad chain Sweetgreen, Domino's, chicken fingers restaurant Raising Cane's, and fast-casual pizza chain Mod Pizza.

Andrew Robson, president of Earnest Research, said, "While our data showed that Chick-fil-A was the clear winner for churned Chipotle customers, it was also a winner for current Chipotle customers. Current Chipotle customers increased their total visits to Chick-fil-A by 22.4%."

Chipotle and Chick-fil-A are nearly the same size now in terms of store count — the burrito chain has more than 2,300 locations, while the chicken sandwich company now has about 2,200 — but Chick-fil-A has long surpassed Chipotle in terms of sales.

Anyone who has experienced Chick-fil-A's wild lines probably won't be surprised by this (police are sometimes called to help direct traffic when a new store opens). The average Chick-fil-A store made $4.4 million in 2016, compared to the $1.8 million a Chipotle location earned, according to data from QSR Magazine. (Before the food safety incidents, Chipotle restaurants were making about $2.5 million per year.) The magazine ranks Chick-fil-A as the country's eighth largest restaurant by sales, and Chipotle the 14th biggest.

Chick-fil-A told BuzzFeed News its sales in 2017 jumped to $9 billion, up from $8 billion in 2016. Chipotle's 2016 revenue was $3.9 billion.

A Chick-fil-A spokesperson declined to comment on any competition with the burrito chain. A Chipotle spokesman also declined to comment on Earnest's findings.

The burrito chain is searching for a new CEO to replace its founder and chief executive Steve Ells, who announced in November that he would be stepping down. Ells called it "the right thing to do for all our stakeholders." The classically trained chef made it his mission to serve fast food made with high-end ingredients and techniques.

Chipotle expects to open as many as 150 stores in 2018, and Chick-fil-A said it will continue adding about 100 restaurants annually.
