I Baked A Recipe From The 1910s That Immediately Made Me Want To Puke

I’m full, but thanks.

Throughout history, there have been food trends that have come and gone.

Whether they were born out of necessity, or tastes, some recipes remained and some simply faded away into obscurity.

Her goal was to find out if the dish was...edible.

So she found a recipe from just after the turn of the century for an oyster and chicken pie and decided to try her hand at it.

Apparently, oysters were super popular in the early 1900s because there were a lot of them, and they cost half as much as beef.

First, Alix had to parboil a chicken. The amount wasn't specified, so she went with four chicken breasts.

She hardboiled two eggs simultaneously in another pot.

After the chicken was fully cooked, Alix had to cut it into small pieces, and lay it out in a deep baking dish.

Next up was the part that Alix was dreading. She had to place a pint of oysters (yes, a pint) over the chicken.

You guys, the stench was kind of unbearable. Alix said, "I am not even exaggerating. That is so strong."

The recipe called for her to add two hardboiled eggs in pieces, as well as a tablespoon of butter and "some stock" of celery.

"Whoever invented this recipe was like, 'What else can we put on top of this?'"

As for seasonings, the recipe only called for some salt and cayenne, but Alix didn't want to go too overboard with the cayenne...or did she?

"Actually, maybe I should. I'd prefer my mouth be numb when I bite into this." LOL!

Then came the most confusing part: moisten with flour and a gill of milk, which she found out was half a cup.

Then she stirred it up a bit, creating some sort of oyster chicken juice water. Eww.

Lastly, instead of adding the "puff paste" the recipe called for, Alix opted for the modern-day version of a ready-made puff pastry to lay on top to finish the pie off.

She used the dough scraps to make a design on top of the pie that ended up looking like a vagina. Ha!

After baking the pie for 40 minutes in 350-degree heat, there was nowhere to hide. It was time for Alix to taste her questionable concoction.

And it was as unpleasant as she thought it would be.

But she wanted others to try it, because she didn't particularly like oysters, so it might have just been her.

But it wasn't. A coworker said, "It tastes like if I was a character in SpongeBob SquarePants and I just ingested, like, all of the ocean."

Sounds about right.
